The Sabres will play the 2011-12 season in the First Niagara Center. In connection with First Niagara Bank’s acquisition of upstate New York and Connecticut branches from HSBC Bank USA, the Buffalo-headquartered regional bank agreed to purchase the naming rights to HSBC Arena, the 18,690-seat home of the Sabres since 1996. Pittsburgh’s general manager wasn’t going to find anyone on the market better than the two players he already knew were working toward a return to the Penguins’ lineup: Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. The Penguins played without both of their $8.7 million centers for the final 29 games last NHL season and all of the playoffs. Ayers, who spent the last two NHL seasons as goalie coach at St. Cloud State University in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, will also serve as coordinator of the USNTDP’s Warren Strelow National Goaltending Mentor Program.
